BBC RADIO 2 CANADIAN SHOW

THE MAPLE MUSIC REVOLUTION

In a major two-part series for BBC Radio 2 in the United Kingdom, legendary DJ/historian Bob Harris looks beneath the surface to discover the reasons for the emergence of an unique, creative and dynamic Canadian music scene.

"From Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen to Sarah McLachlan, the Dears and Arcade Fire, Canada has had a massive impact on the way the world listens to music," says Harris.

"The Maple Music Revolution" will be broadcast on Oct. 29th and Nov. 5th on BBC Radio 2. The programs are a production of the Whispering Bob Broadcasting Company and will be aired on the BBC2 website.

The programs feature exclusive interviews with such Canadian veterans as Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Leonard Cohen, Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), Geddy Lee (Rush), Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), and Chad Kroeger and Ryan Peake (Nickelback).

As well, the cream of a new generation of contemporary Canadian artists are featured, including Sam Roberts, Ron Sexsmith, Kathleen Edwards, Oh Susanna, Dallas Good (the Sadies), Hawksley Workman, Sue Foley, Alana Levandoski, Jim Bryson,
Buck 65, Luke Doucet, and Pilate. Interviews in Toronto were coordinated by Billboard's Canadian bureau chief Larry LeBlanc.

"What struck me most after being in Toronto doing interviews was the sense of community within the Canadian industry," says Harris "The scene is much less competitive among the musicians than it is in the UK. You get the feeling that musicians there are all supportive of one another’s shared experiences. All the good and bad stuff. The brutal touring on one hand; and the (Canadian
funding agency) FACTOR support on the other hand. It all matches up.

"Without exception, every musician we spoke with was in it for the music. That’s unique!"

Stir Crazy

You know sometimes it is better to be away when trying out things. Years ago, I had a moustache growing contest in the early days of Punchbuggy. We decided to grow moustaches from Ottawa until we entered California. It was humourous mostly cause we all had sad facial hair and after two and a half weeks, we looked weak, very weak.

Fast forward to the current time of our lives and I am in a van with different people and it is all happening again. This time around it was about trying out beards to feel at home around My Morning Jacket and their healthy Garth Hudson like growth. Truth be told, I could not and cannot curently grow a beard, so I asked that the full facial growth experiment turn into just moustaches for the last seven days. What appears above is a photo Kathleen took of me and my pathetic ability to grow the manly moustache. Kathleen will have a photo of us all on her site with just the moustaches very soon. She promises.

It is better this happens here than at home, cause I cannot imagine Lisa being too thrilled to see this around the house.

Although I have to admit, I have become quite fond of my "dirt lip" look....

Austin City Limits

It was great to see late last night our Austin City Limits broadcast finally, I am never where it is playing and we happened upon it and just like that, there we were.

This Week Around Here:

Things are well here this morning in Buffalo. We are enroute to Cleavland to re-join My Morning Jacket after one night away. A couple interesting things this day:

Austin City Limits: I have been told that to all of you that might have missed Austin City Limits that it will be on Buffalo PBS this Friday at 8pm (Good for the Satellite subscriber with multiple PBS feeds).

MacLeans on MacLean
: In the current issue of Macleans(Oct. 24th) Ron Maclean is asked a few question and so kindly mentioned the following which I find quite awesome:

Ron MacLean finishes the sentences

Never had a playoff beard

JOHN INTINI

For many fans, hockey wasn't fully back until Ron MacLean stepped behind the desk to play Don Cherry's mild-mannered foil on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada earlier this month. During the lockouts -- first the NHL and then the CBC -- the Oakville, Ont., resident kept busy by playing in three "beer leagues" (he broke his nose during a game last fall). MacLean, 45, recently finished Maclean's Associate Editor John Intini's sentences.

THE FUNNIEST THING I'VE SEEN AT A LOCAL RINK . . . was in Bentley, Alta., when a mom's dentures fell out on the ice while she was yelling at a referee. I was the ref. She had come out to give me hell after her son was hurt but ended up pretty mortified about the teeth.

A PLAYOFF BEARD . . . is something I've never had. I can't keep my hands off my face when I have any growth.

I DO MY BEST THINKING . . . on water. I've always liked being in motion. I used to race boats competitively.

THE MANLIEST THING I'VE EVER DONE IS . . . a tough one. I'd have to say weightlifting since I'm not a handy guy.

I'LL NEVER THROW AWAY . . . all of my hockey books, which, unfortunately, make up most of my library. One of the reasons I wanted to avoid doing sports for a living was because I knew I'd become a social illiterate.

ESSENTIAL MACLEAN

1. During the hockey lockout, he travelled to about 35 local rinks in Canada to host CBC's Movie Night in Canada.

2. Never leaves home without music -- Kathleen Edwards, Matt Mays and Jim Bryson are some recent favourites.

3. He's a seven-time Gemini Award winner.

Hey just a quick hello and a chance to post this photo here of Colin preparing to rock his ass of in Atlanta. What colin is doing here is like this: he calms himself and allows his heart to slow to hibernation rate. He then remains this way until right before showtime. It enables him to come out and expode on to the stage with great rock and roll fury.
Kevin and I watched some country today on Music Row in Nashville. We tried to get Joel on board, but acording to Joel "I did that back in the 80s', I do not need to see it now".
Happy Thanksgiving to family and friends back home....

Here is We:

So we are hanging out in the rain in the van and hell, we are getting wireless and so that means with the wireless comes the ability for me to write and post some thing just like this.
Where we are is Knoxville, Tennesse and damn if Joel and Kevin and I did not find some sweet ass $3 happy pints of Guiness this afternoon. I can hear the MMJ (what the kids call My Morning Jacket) soundchecking and jamming away. They are sounding fine indeed and it is agreed that this will be a fun, fun trip for all of us.
I want to wish every one a wonderful and happy Canadian Thanksgiving. It has historically been my favourite holiday of the year, I hang out with my folks and watch the CFL with my dad. The great fall weather, awe damn it, I just love it.
So anywho, I am missing my Canadian turkey day, but no complaints, Knoxville is terrific...

Week Ends and Then Begins:
Week beginnings: Welcome to October:
-Move: Successful. Cheap. The change is good, The terror level has lowered.
-Weekend outing: To see the Dirtbombs, who I thought were great. I wanted to see Ted Leo tonight, but my budget allowed one show this week. Shame on me though, I love the last two records.
-Also, I like this guy and I love his site: www.timfite.com He is on Anti and cusses alot....
-Off this Thursday for the rest of the month with My Morning Jacket. We start in Atlanta, which I have seen the airport of three times but never the town. Huge fucking airport, that is for certain.

Well, Happy Monday, now get back to work and quit looking on the internet...
